Tafsir

Scholarly commentary explaining a verse — its context, its meaning and how the scholars have understood it.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:43

Word by word

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰٓ أَلْقُوا۟ مَآ أَنتُم مُّلْقُونَ

Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."

Ma'arif al-Qur'an

Mufti Muhammad Shafi

Commentary.أَلْقُوا مَا أَنتُم مُّلْقُونَMusa (علیہ السلام) said to them, "Throw you down what you are to throw." (26:43)Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) said to the magicians ` You show the magic you wish to show'. With a cursory look one might be inclined to think that Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) ordered them to perform their magic. But with a little deep thinking it becomes clear that actually it was not an order from Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) to 'show magic, but the real intention was to demonstrate the fallacy of magic. This demonstration was not possible without the magic shown by them. Therefore, he asked them to show their tricks or magic. It is exactly like a zindiq (an extreme heretic) is asked to put forward his arguments, so that they may be countered. It is obvious that such an invitation cannot be treated as an acceptance of infidelity.

Tafsir is provided for educational reference. Paragraph breaks are added for readability — the wording of each commentary is unchanged. For religious guidance, consult a qualified scholar.
